Air India is back under Tata Group ownership. Has the experience improved enough to challenge IndiGo? 20,000 reviews tell us the answer.

Air India's acquisition by the Tata Group in 2022 raised hopes of a turnaround for India's former flag carrier. Two years in, we analyzed 10,000 IndiGo reviews and 10,000 Air India reviews to see if those hopes are materializing.

On-time performance

IndiGo still dominates on punctuality โ€” its core brand promise. 72% of IndiGo reviewers mentioned on-time or early arrivals versus 51% for Air India. Air India's on-time performance has improved under Tata management, but IndiGo's logistics efficiency remains the benchmark.

IndiGo has maintained India's best on-time performance record for 15 consecutive years according to DGCA data โ€” and WhoIsAtTop reviewers confirm it.

In-flight experience

Air India wins by a wide margin on in-flight experience for full-service routes. Seat comfort, meal quality, and cabin crew professionalism all score higher. Reviewers consistently note that Air India's Vistara merger integration has brought significant improvements in Business Class.

Baggage handling

Air India receives significantly more baggage complaints โ€” 22% of negative reviews mention delayed or damaged baggage versus 8% for IndiGo. This is Air India's most cited operational weakness and remains a work in progress.

Which should you choose?

The answer depends on your priority. Choose IndiGo for domestic short-haul travel where punctuality matters most and you want no surprises. Choose Air India for international routes and when in-flight comfort is a priority โ€” the improvement trajectory under Tata Group is real and reviewers are noticing it.
